Canberra’s Building Boom Exposes Bricklaying Skills Gap

Posted in

Canberra’s construction boom is highlighting a practical constraint for builders and other businesses that depend on skilled trades: the local pipeline of bricklayers is extremely small. Reporting from ABC Business (Australia) says only seven apprentice bricklayers are currently training in the Australian Capital Territory.

For construction businesses, the immediate issue may be scheduling. If qualified bricklayers are in short supply, projects that require brickwork could face longer waits, creating pressure on timelines and making coordination with other trades more difficult. The situation also shows why a strong project pipeline does not automatically translate into more available capacity.

Small and mid-sized contractors can treat this as a planning signal. Confirm trade availability early, build realistic lead times into project discussions and avoid assuming that a busy market will provide qualified workers at short notice. Where possible, keeping clients informed about timing and sequencing can reduce surprises if specialist work becomes a bottleneck.

The longer-term business lesson is the value of workforce development. Apprenticeships take time to produce qualified tradespeople, so businesses that rely on specialist skills may need to think beyond immediate hiring and consider how training, retention and partnerships can support future capacity. Canberra’s experience is a reminder that labour planning should be part of growth planning, particularly during a construction upswing.
