Queensland inquiry raises questions about workplace influence

Posted in

An inquiry in Queensland has heard claims that the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) used political influence and intimidation. ABC Business (Australia) reported that former senior public servants and industry figures were among those said to have faced aggressive union tactics.

The claims remain matters for the inquiry to examine. However, the evidence highlights a practical business issue: workplace influence can affect how organisations manage relationships with unions, contractors, public bodies and other stakeholders. For small and mid-sized businesses, even an allegation involving a larger industry participant can prompt questions about governance and reputational exposure.

Owners can respond by making workplace processes clear, consistent and well documented. That includes keeping accurate records of discussions, decisions and reported concerns; ensuring managers know who can approve commitments; and using established channels to escalate disputes. Businesses working with contractors or industry partners may also benefit from checking that their agreements, conduct expectations and reporting procedures are easy to understand.

These steps do not determine the merits of the claims heard by the inquiry, nor do they suggest that every union relationship presents a problem. They are basic controls that can help a business respond calmly when workplace pressure, disputed conduct or reputational concerns arise. Where a matter could involve legal obligations, owners should obtain advice suited to their jurisdiction and circumstances.
