The Greens say the project could use six percent of New Zealand’s electricity supply, raising concerns about how its energy requirements may affect the wider market.
For business owners, the practical issue is not simply whether data centres create economic activity. It is how the costs of new electricity demand, grid capacity and related infrastructure are allocated. If those costs are spread across the broader customer base, businesses may face additional pressure through energy prices or other charges. If projects are delayed while new rules are considered, developers and suppliers may instead face greater uncertainty about timelines and investment decisions.
Clearer consent criteria could help businesses assess risk before committing capital, particularly where a project’s electricity needs are substantial.
